ANIMAL PARK

Amiens - France

The project constitutes an urban and landscape weaving in this unique context. The first intention is to “flood” the given site with nature; an “urban forest” to the south as an extension of the park, the African plain to the north-west with its vegetation, ponds, animals, the greenhouse… and the flora and fauna of the existing zoological park to the south-west
To accompany the zoo’s new façade, a large landscaped square guides the visitor from the street to the entrance hall. When entering this esplanade of approximately 2300m², the visitor leaves the urban space and gradually enters the landscaped world of the zoo. The mineralized ground is fragmented in patches to let the plants penetrate the space until creating a forest atmosphere announcing the future surprises and discoveries of the zoo visit.
As you pass through the entrance building at the ticket office, the porch opens up a first perspective on the whole of the African plain, which closes in on the slightly raised sloping dome of the greenhouse. The kiosk erected at the foot of the pond marks the beginning of the tour: from this light wooden construction, the viewer can see the entire plain: the central pond, the zebras, the antelopes, the giraffes. The tour continues on the wooden footbridge along the pond.
To the west of the park, the greenhouse created will house crocodiles, hippos… around a central water point. The wooden path will evolve in a mangrove vegetation sheltering birds and will allow access to the slopes planted with palms, bamboos, ficus before reaching the herbaceous race vegetation of the summit clearing the view from the belvedere. On leaving the greenhouse, the visitor overlooks the African plain, at the height of the giraffes, for an exceptional view.
